CHAPTER SIXTEEN
âI donât know,â Sam muttered, staring through the one-way mirror at the suspect seated in the precinctâs interrogation room. âI guess I just assumed it would be a man.â
Dana, rubbing a neck that ached from the whiplash of their crash, wasnât entirely surprised by Samâs assumption. In her profession, the majority of their suspects were men. But she knew better than to rely on such biases; she had learned early in her career that anyoneâman or womanâwas capable of anything.
The woman, bundled up in her gray hoodie, sat silently and motionless in the cold, sterile room, her eyes vacant as they stared at the metal table before her. She seemed worlds away from the frantic, desperate woman they had apprehended on the side of the road.
After arresting the woman, theyâd performed a brief search of her car, during which they had discovered a nine-millimeter hidden beneath the seat and a large bag of white powder taped to the underside of the wheel well, covered in mud from their forest chase. Dana was a little surprised the woman hadnât tried to use the gun.
Then again, maybe sheâd realize it would only make things worse.
The door behind them opened and Officer Trask strode in, peering down at his phone. "The car is registered to a Juanita Jones,â he said, glancing up at Dana and Sam. âNo priors, outstanding warrants or connections to other cases weâre looking into."
"Who's Juanita Jones?" Dana asked, her gaze fixated on the woman in the cold room.
âNo idea,â Trask said. âA nobody, as far as I can tell.â
âYou sure?â Sam asked, his voice low but with an undercurrent of tension. âYouâre not just holding out on us again?â
Trask stiffened. Dana, not at all interested in sitting through another argument, sighed and shook her head. âListen, you two need to bury the hatchet, okay? I get that his remark about Kenneth Ballard upset you, Samââ
âHe has no respect for vets, no idea what weâve been through,â Sam said, crossing his arms. âBesides, that lead about the car? He shouldâve told us much sooner. If he canât competently do his jobââ
âDo my job?â Trask said, turning red. âI didnât ask for you two to come down here and take charge of this case, alright? This was supposed to be my caseâthey're moving me over to homicide. Just haven't made it official yet." He shook his head bitterly. "The only reason you got called in is because of that letter about the Constitution, so now everyone thinks this is being done by some 'Constitution Killer' fellow. And since you're the 'experts' on him, they roll out the red carpet for you."
So thatâs why Trask doesnât like us, Dana thought. Sheâd been getting a strange vibe from him from the beginning. Sheâd assumed it was simply that he felt uncomfortable around Feds, but now she understood the true reason. This was personal.
"Look, we're not trying to undermine you here," she said, her voice steady and calm despite the rising tension in the room.
